Voluntarism Defined
In this video we will define the tenets of Voluntarism and contrast them with its antithesis: the State!
The Problem
The MPAA & RIAA claim that the internet is stealing billions of dollars worth of their property by sharing copies of files. They’re willing to destroy the internet with things like SOPA & PIPA in an attempt to collect that money.
The Inspiration
Hundreds of years ago a Japanese judge (Ōoka Tadasuke) handled a lawsuit by a paranoid innkeeper who accused a poor student of literally stealing the fumes of his cooking by eating when the innkeeper was cooking to flavour his dull food. Although his colleagues advised Ōoka to throw the case out as ridiculous, he decided to hear the case. The judge resolved the matter by ordering the student to pass the money he had in one hand to his other and ruling that the price of the smell of food is the sound of money. — Wikipedia
The Solution
Let’s just pay them the money! They’ve made it very clear that they consider digital copies to be just as valuable as the original. That makes it a lot easier to pay them back in two ways:
- We can email them scanned images of dollar bills instead of bulky paper
- We don’t have to worry about the hassle of shipping huge quantities of cash
How to Help
Take a picture or scan an image of your money. Send digital copies to the MPAA & RIAA in whatever quantity you feel you can afford. Don’t go overboard. If you can only afford 20 copies then that’s good enough. If enough people contribute we should be able to fully satisify even their most outrageous demands.
- MPAA Contact page
- RIAA About page (they don’t make it easy to send them email it seems)
Wikipedia gave me a copy, and I made a copy of it here. Please make your own copies if you can afford to do so.
If images are out of your budget here is some ASCII money (link courtesy of Danieru on HN). Say no to intellectual monopoly!

This is vastly misunderstood
Oh, thanks to whoever made this. I have this fight daily.
Thank you folks!
“Agnostic” isn’t a position, people.

She logged into her Facebook as I requested, and as I followed the COO’s instructions to scan her timeline and friends list looking for evidence of moral turpitude, I became aware she was writing something on her iPad.
“Taking notes?” I asked politely.
“No,” she smiled, “Emailing a human rights lawyer I know.” To say that the tension in the room could be cut with a knife would be understatement of the highest order. “Oh?” I asked. I waited, and as I am an expert in out-waiting people, she eventually cracked and explained herself.
“If you are surfing my Facebook, you could reasonably be expected to discover that I am a Lesbian. Since discrimination against me on this basis is illegal in Ontario, I am just preparing myself for the possibility that you might refuse to hire me and instead hire someone who is a heterosexual but less qualified in any way. Likewise, if you do hire me, I might need to have your employment contracts disclosed to ensure you aren’t paying me less than any male and/or heterosexual colleagues with equivalent responsibilities and experience.”
I got her out of the room as quickly as possible. The next few interviews were a blur, I was shaken. And then it happened again. This time, I found myself talking to a young man fresh out of University about a development position. After allowing me to surf his Facebook, he asked me how I felt about parenting. As a parent, it was easy to say I liked the idea. Then he dropped the bombshell.
His partner was expecting, and shortly after being hired he would be taking six months of parental leave as required by Ontario law. I told him that he should not have discussed this matter with me. “Oh normally I wouldn’t, but since you’re looking through my Facebook, you know that already. Now of course, you would never refuse to hire someone because they plan to exercise their legal right to parental leave, would you?”
What could I say? I guess we have another hire whether he’s qualified or not. Here’s the bottom line: My ability to select the best candidates for our positions has been irreparably compromised by looking into their private lives. I’ve been “tainted” by knowledge of their sexual orientation, illnesses, religion, political affiliations, and other factors that expose us to anti-discrimination legislation. We can’t even claim that the employee improperly disclosed these matters to us, as we are the ones initiating the investigation of their private doings.
I had originally thought that if this ever happened to me in an interview, I’d decline, and leave if I had to. But this is genius.
Whenever a Republican tries to claim they aren’t racist, let’s remember this Trayvon Martin incident.
You see, Republicans could have easily taken the stand of defending the Stand Your Ground laws. They could have said they welcomed an investigation and believed that the investigation would show the truth.
But they didn’t do that. Instead, the went after the victim and portrayed him as someone who probably had it coming.
This is all we need to know about Republicans and how they approach matters of race. When given an opportunity, they didn’t hesitate for a second to smear a dead kid.
Riiiiiiiiight. Santorum is a fucking moron. “Banning” porn, especially gay porn won’t to shit. Straight people watch gay porn too. Does that mean they’re gay? No? Didn’t think so. -___-
The banning of gaay porn will make homosexuality disappear a matter of months? X’D I haven’t watched gay porn (or lesbian porn) in a long time as porn isn’t really my thing, yet for some reason… still gay. Hm.
FOLKS
Okay, I hate Rick Santorum with every fiber of my being.
But seriously?
HE NEVER ACTUALLY SAID THIS
DOES NO ONE DO THEIR FUCKING RESEARCH?
1) Look at the image at the bottom. It says “Americans for a More American America”. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that it’s clearly satirical.
2) His views on pornography are basically stupid, but aside from the very first sentence, he never actually said this.
In case you’re interested in the just-as-ugly truth:
America is suffering a pandemic of harm from pornography. A wealth of research is now available demonstrating that pornography causes profound brain changes in both children and adults, resulting in widespread negative consequences. Addiction to pornography is now common for adults and even for some children. The average age of first exposure to hard-core, Internet pornography is now 11. Pornography is toxic to marriages and relationships. It contributes to misogyny and violence against women. It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking.
Every family must now be concerned about the harm from pornography. As a parent, I am concerned about the widespread distribution of illegal obscene pornography and its profound effects on our culture.
For many decades, the American public has actively petitioned the United States Congress for laws prohibiting distribution of hard-core adult pornography.
Congress has responded. Current federal “obscenity” laws prohibit distribution of hardcore (obscene) pornography on the Internet, on cable/satellite TV, on hotel/motel TV, in retail shops and through the mail or by common carrier. Rick Santorum believes that federal obscenity laws should be vigorously enforced. “If elected President, I will appoint an Attorney General who will do so.”
The Obama Administration has turned a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws. While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum Administration.
I proudly support the efforts of the War on Illegal Pornography Coalition that has tirelessly fought to get federal obscenity laws enforced. That coalition is composed of 120 national, state, and local groups, including Morality in Media, Family Research Council, Focus on the Family, American Family Association, Cornerstone Family Council of New Hampshire, Pennsylvania Family Institute, Concerned Women for America, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, and a host of other groups. Together we will prevail.

I love that he mentions the word misogyny. Ya, porn is what leads to misogyny, not anti-choice, misogynist politicians who treat (cis or trans) women or anyone who’s not straight, white, christian, rich, cismale like they’re second or third class citizens.
More ‘paraphrased’ than ‘misquoted’ - he’s been spewing the same message in different words for years now.
Although to respond to the comment above - you’re right, all those things (and people) contribute to systemic misogyny - but so does porn. I abhor 99.99% of Rick Santorum’s entire existence, and even in this 0.01% I loathe his solution - but on the fundamentals of this issue, he’s correct.
